Topic:  In 2018, women comprised only 19.5 percent of equity partners and 30.5 percent of nonequity partners in the nation’s 200 largest firms, according to an annual survey by the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL), based in Chicago. That’s only a 3 percent increase of equity partners from 12 years earlier—“a sluggish upward trajectory,” NAWL concludes.  At this rate, women will achieve gender parity in equity partnerships in 160 years, according to a 2015 analysis by The American Lawyer in its Special Report: Big Law Is Failing Women.

Why do some women decide to leave law firms to start their own law practice, and what obstacles or challenges do they encounter in their practice and as new law firm owners?  Tune in to this informative panel as these leading lady lawyers discuss how race and gender have shaped their legal careers, how they have each built a thriving legal practice, and what they are looking forward to in 2021 as law firm owners.

Topics will cover:

  • Dealing with implicit gender and racial bias from clients, opposing counsel, referral sources, etc.;
  • How women- and minority-owned law firms can commit to increasing visibility of racial and gender discrimination in 2021; and
  • The role small firms, especially those owned by women and minorities, can play in recruiting, hiring, and advancing the potential of intersectional individuals in law in the future.

Speakers and Moderator:  Panelists include Natasha Allen of Allen & Hatcher, Ann Cun of Accel Visa Attorneys, Aravinda Seshadri of Venturous Counsel and Nnena Ukuku of Venture Gained Legal.  Panel moderated by Lindsey Mignano of Smith Shapourian Mignano.

When attending, please use your mute button to prevent background noise, but do not place the call on hold. (Some firms have hold music.)
